SAN GIMIGNANO

The town of San Gimignano is located high on a hill, towering above the Elsa Valley. This ancient Etruscan village began its life as a town in the 10th century taking its name from the Holy Bishop of Modena, St. Gimignano, who is said to have saved the village from the barbarian hordes. This medieval town originally boasted 72 massive towers as a sign of rebellion towards the law that no buildings were to exceed the height of the Commune Tower Rognosa. Today only 15 out of the 72 towers still remain but are enough to give you a look into what history this town holds.
