San Casciano Val di Pesa
Located on the southern border of Florence and the northern border of Chianti Classico, San Casciano is a beautiful city abundent with nature and uncontaminated beauty. Discovered by the Etruscans, San Casciano was greatly feuded over with the Romans for its ideal location and natural water springs that flowed out of its densely wooded territory.
Since Roman times it was a post station or "mansio" on the hill just before the descent to Florence begins. The earliest written documentation dates back to 1043. In the 12th century, San Casciano was a small village built closely around the church. Because of its location and its proximity to Florence, it was frequently devastated. After several devastations the duke of Athens, having conquered Florence in 1343, had a circle of fortresses built around it. After the duke was driven out of Florence the Florentine Republic eventually rebuilt it and it was complted in 1356.
From that time on San Casciano resisted all military attacks and eventually when it became part of the State of Tuscany under the Medici rule, the fortresses were destroyed and the surrounding castles were turned into spacious villas and homes for the wealthy Florentines who wanted leisurely country homes.
Thie medival town has a historic center set up like a maze of narrow streets, alleys and piazza's wrapping around the hill towards the Collegiate and the Town Hall. Only the church of Santa Maria del Prato remains from the ancient town dating back to 4th century. Wineries and olive oil producers are located throughout the villages around San Casciano and contribute to the local trattoria's and food shops in town. Due to its historic heritage and magnificent surroundings, as well as its conservation policies, San Casciano has been nominated one of the Most Beautiful Old Towns of Italy.
