Montepulciano is a hilltop town in the southeast region of Siena in Tuscany near Umbria. Rich and well preserved with 16th century palaces and impressive architecture including the Tempio di San Biagio. The town switched back and forth between Siena and Florence several times before becoming under Florentine fule in 1511 when its fortresses were built by Cosimo I.

Description

This town itself boasts Piazza Grande as its main center including cafes, shops and a cathedral to peruse around and enjoy after a glass of its famous Vino Nobile di Montepulciano wine at one of its darling enotecas. Known mainly for its DOCG wine, Montepulciano attracts wine enthusiasts from all over to experience this full bodied red. Also known for the thermal baths at San Albino and its untouched natural environment surrounding the town, Montepulciano attracts visitors seeking total relaxation and enjoyment.

Sights to See

Church of St. Augustine
Designed in the early 1400's by Michelozzo Michelozzi, this disciple of Brunelleschi and Donatello included interesting Gothic features and sculptural elements as inspiration from his mentors making a beautiful and interesting display of architecture and beauty. Inside enjoy the beauty of paintings by Barocci, Allori, Lorenzo di Credi and a crucifix attributed to Donatello.

Temple of San Biagio
Outside of the town you can find the Temple of San Biagio by Francesco Giamberti rising from the hillside. Built on the remains of the ancient church St. Blaise where lore says that the Our Lady painting was seen moving her eyes. The Greek-style design includes a massive dome and four cross wings and offers it viewers frescoes representing the Transit, the Assumption and the Coronation of Our Lady.

Bravio
On last weekend of August a 80 kilo wine barrel race is run between the different districts of the town and there is a procession in 13th-century dress. This race was originally a horse race in honor of St. John Decollato and has transformed into a race more suitable for this small wine community.

San Albino
Just 5 km from the town of Montepulciano lies the small hamlet of San Albino containing thermal baths with beneficial healing properties. Enjoy one of the many spas in this area to help detox your body for total health.
